Conference
We hope you can join us! 2008 Conference: Communities and Libraries
Communities and LibrariesAre you feeling inspired by CAL 2007's great sessions, keynotes, and the opportunities to catch up with colleagues around the state? We had a great conference! While we were "Getting RadiCAL", there was another theme in the background. Nancy Pearl mentioned it when she talked about libraries being at the heart of the community. Commissioner Dwight Jones hinted at it as he talked about the importance of libraries to lifelong learning. ALA President Dr. Loriene Roy spoke of it as she outlined her plans for her presidency. During the "Julie Lecture", Nancy Kranich spoke of libraries being "temples of civic engagement", and Nick Arvin talked about it at his closing session. What was this hidden theme? It's the theme for the 2008 CAL Conference: Communities and Libraries. Over the next year, I challenge all of you to look at your communities with fresh eyes and notice the impact your library has on education, economic development, and the revitalization of the community. The work you do has a profound effect on creating the community you are part of. Come back next year to CAL 2008 and share your stories! CAL President Martin Garnar sees this theme as part of what he wants to do this year -- strengthen the community of librarians through CAL. There will be many opportunities through the year to participate in building a strong library community. Come to CAL 2008, hear the stories and be part of our library community. I look forward to working with an inspired conference planning team to create an opportunity for all of you to share the story of your community. Jo Haight Sarling

Read to the Children Program Nearly 14,000 individuals are currently incarcerated in Colorado, and many have school-age children. "Read to the Children" is offered by libraries in state correctional facilities to promote literacy and the use of libraries by providing incarcerated parents the opportunity to participate in their children's lives through the use of audio media and children's literature. Bring your donations to the office (near registration) at the CAL Conference and support these projects. Thank you!
