Why Support CAL?
by William A. Knott, County Librarian, Jefferson County Public Library

Involvement in the Colorado Association of Libraries benefits the library community in a variety of ways. It brings Colorado libraries together to achieve common goals as well as to support smaller library systems and address their specific needs. CAL provides a forum for different types of libraries in the state to discuss common problems and brainstorm solutions. CAL has more influence than the sum of its parts; therefore our collective voices can be heard.

As a member of CAL, opportunities exist for any interest or ability. Ruth Anna, the chair of our Library Board of Trustees, is also the current chair of CAL’s Trustees and Friends Division. Jim Connor, another of our Trustees and a regional vice president of ALTA (Association for Library Trustees and Advocates), has also been heavily involved in CAL and its principles. The more our Trustees become involved with CAL, the better advocates they are for our library and Colorado libraries in general.

Membership in CAL has afforded me the opportunity to serve on its Legislative Committee, of which I am the current chair. This has allowed me to work with hard-working, intelligent and caring people. We have studied issues such as Referendums C and D, appearing on the ballot this fall, and have been able to make a difference in the communities we serve.

Another way CAL has proven beneficial is the assembly of its annual conference. The conference is a good way to get additional training, network with other librarians and Trustees around the state, listen to keynote speakers who can give insight into the future of libraries and see a variety of interesting exhibits.

With so many important issues facing libraries today, it’s critical that the connection between libraries is maintained. There was a time when people believed that computers and the Internet would replace libraries, which has been proven untrue. But libraries have had to adjust with the changing times, and it’s important to give assistance to our fellow librarians when needed. CAL and its partners have helped to make this possible.
