Intellectual Freedom
Intellectual freedom is a cornerstone of libraries and of a healthy democracy. Communities thrive when people have access to a wide range of information and viewpoints — including ideas that may be unfamiliar or controversial. Libraries are committed to building collections with depth and breadth, and to sharing resources so individuals can explore topics, form their own opinions, and meet their information needs.
CAL supports intellectual freedom by educating the Colorado library community about related principles and emerging issues through programs, lectures, and publications. We also support First Amendment rights in appropriate venues and, in collaboration with the Legislative Committee, advocate for legislation and ballot initiatives that advance intellectual freedom.
While we provide education and advocacy, CAL does not offer legal counsel or direct funding.
