Library Lobby Day - Cancelled

March 18, 2020
8:00 AM - 10:30 AM

Colorado State Capitol
200 East Colfax
Denver, CO 80203

It’s a new decade, a new year, and a new state budget cycle for the Colorado General Assembly! The CAL Legislative Committee needs your help in trying to secure more money for Colorado libraries. The State Grants to Libraries program provided funding to 318 Colorado libraries in 2019, which means there are hundreds of library stories that can be shared about the work that is done every day. The CAL Legislative Committee asks you to tell your legislators the stories of how your library impacts your community by participating in Library Lobby Day.

The CAL Legislative Committee’s core message for the 2020 session is “Libraries Build Community.” Last year, legislators appropriated an additional $500,000 for the State Grants to Libraries program. In addition to thanking legislators for the current appropriation of $3M for this program, the Legislative Committee is asking for an additional $500,000 to invest in educational materials and for continued support of the rights of individuals to conduct research and explore new ideas. Additional funding helps support free access to information, which in turn supports an informed citizenry and enriches our democracy.

The CAL Legislative Committee is promoting three ways to reach out to the Colorado General Assembly in Spring 2020:

  • Meet with your legislators this spring when it’s convenient for you (with emphasis on the week of March 16-20 if possible).

  • Be visible by joining the Legislative Committee Library Lobby Day on the morning of Wednesday, March 18, 2020, at the State Capitol.

  • Write to your legislator directly or provide our group with written materials to be included in a packet to your legislators along with other information about the positive impact this funding has on our library communities.

If you would like to participate in Lobby Day in any of the above ways, the CAL Legislative Committee wants to support you! If you'd like to join them at the Capitol, send a letter to your legislator, need additional information, or have any other questions, please email [email protected].

The committee thanks you for all the wonderful work you do. They hope you’ll join them in connecting with legislators.
